LEGO Building Block Patent

1958 CE

Made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

The LEGO Building Block Patent granted the LEGO company exclusive rights to the present-day LEGO brick. The special design would allow strips or similar building parts to be assembled without the use of additional elements provided with complementary holes, grooves, or protuberances using studs and tubes. Combined, the studs and tubes create clutch power. Clutch power provides stability and endless possibilities for combining bricks. With this technology, it is possible to combine six 2x4 bricks in 915.103.765 different ways. The material and brick itself have changed a few times prior to the present brick. Since 1958, the building block has remained the same with technology that allows LEGO not to lose its value because blocks bought years ago fit perfectly with blocks bought today, offering unlimited play and building possibilities.
